“Devotion”: The untold story of Naval Aviator Jesse Brown
Something interesting has been happening in the film industry lately. More films telling the true stories of Black heroes—we never knew, are being made. Jesse Brown, the first Black U.S. Naval Aviator to fight in the Korean War, is one such story honoring his life and legacy. Aknowingspirit was invited to a private screening of “Devotion” at the American Film Institute (AFI). The film centers on Jesse Brown as a Naval Officer in flight school, and highlights the racial tensions he endured while in training. Throughout the movie, just before a test, Brown would look in the mirror and tell himself every negative and hateful comment others said about him. His aim was to psyche himself up, so he could once again prove the naysayers wrong. Still, he wasn’t alone in his struggle. His beautiful and loving wife, along with his young daughter, were always there for him—and their support was the biggest contributor to his resilience. More support came in the form of a true friendship between Jesse and his co-pilot, Tom Hudner. A major take away from this film, is the importance of defining yourself. Jesse’s heroic story would have never been a reality had he listened to the negative and unfounded opinions of others. “Sometimes, you can’t do what people tell you,” Jesse said. His defiance made it possible for others like him to dream bigger. Go support this powerful film! Out in theaters November 23, 2022.

Author Darren Brown: God uses flawed people for His plans, too
Darren Brown didn’t initially intend on writing professionally. However, after it was suggested from family and close friends that he turn his adult Sunday school lessons into a book, he decided to take a leap faith on publishing. This resulted in his first book, Flawed Like Me which focuses on 12 Biblical characters and how God used them in spite of their flaws for His greater plan. During an interview with Aknowingspirit, Brown talked about how God does this with all of us—and the reason behind this. “By using flawed people, we can’t take the credit for ourselves,” Brown said. “We couldn’t have done it on our own.” Brown went on to discuss how God’s second chances were evident in his own life, and how his life transformed with God’s help. “In the Hands of Her Caregivers”, a book about healthcare and why it must change
When Mara Mitchell’s mom went to the hospital that day for back pain, she assumed this minor set-back would soon be behind them. Mara selected the best medical institutions in the area to treat her mother, with highly competent and diligent medical staff. So since the expert medical treatment was covered, her role was to be loving and supportive while her mother healed. Mara was wrong. During her mother’s hospital stay, Mara had to become an army of one to fight for her mother’s treatment. As a nurse herself, Mara was completely blindsided by the cracks in the healthcare system. This book, based on true events, chronicles first-time author Marilyn Mitchell’s war with the healthcare system. The story explains in great detail everything she had to do to advocate for her mother. “There is a need for change,” Mitchell said in a short interview with Aknowingspirit. “This book is to bring about awareness of the challenges faced by patients and families within the healthcare system.” Mitchell hopes that her experience can help others navigate the complex healthcare system to become better advocates for themselves and their loved ones. In short, this book is required reading for all of us. “In the Hands of Her Caregivers” is set for release June 3, 2022.
